Ibiza Beach Fire

Every firefighter on the Spanish resort island of Ibiza mobilised on Monday to tackle a blaze near a beach that had forced the evacuation of 1,200 partygoers, emergency services said.

"The fire remains active," a spokesman for the island's emergency services told AFP.
Around 1,200 people who had gathered on the beach in Benirras bay for a party were evacuated on Sunday evening, including by boat, because they risked being cut off by the blaze.

According to initial estimates, the fire covered an area of around 100 hectares (250 acres) in the north of the Mediterranean island.

Every firefighter on the island was mobilised, and reinforcements drafted in from the neighbouring island of Majorca.

10 Top Reasons to Visit the Balearics

Although August is well underway there is still availability to escape to the sun of the Balearics this season. For those that are still undecided on where to visit here are the top ten reasons to visit the Balearic Islands!

300 Days of Sun

With 300 days of sun the Balearic Islands are just a short hop for guaranteed sunshine! If the temperamental British August is too much to handle just a two hour flight will transport holidaymakers to a different world of blue skies and warm seas!

Beaches

Whilst beaches throughout the whole of the Balearics are amongst the best in the Mediterranean and the World, there are some that are special highlights. In Ibiza there is Salines, which is part of the national park in the South of the island. In Menorca Cala Pregonda, which is without doubt one of the jewels of Menorca, is a beautiful bay with crisp light sand, crystal blue waters all backed by pine and tamarisk woods. In Formentera the multi award winning Playa Illetes is popular and for those seeking out a quiet and peaceful retreat in Mallorca Es Trenc is ideal.

BA Flights To Ibiza From London City Airport

LONDON City Airport's first venture into leisure tourism appears to be working well.

British Airways has announced it is extending new summer flights to Ibiza and Mallorca by an extra five weeks.

DJ Paul Woolford helped to launch the service last month cabin crew member Stacey
The extension means services to the Balearic Islands until the end of October - which includes the school half term holidays.

Luke Hayhoe, commercial manager for BA CityFlyer, the British Airways subsidiary which operates the service, said: "These leisure routes have really taken off from London City, they proved so popular that we have already increased frequency to Mallorca to five flights a week and to Ibiza to four flights a week in July and August."

The flights were the first time London City Airport has launched new routes targeted primarily at the leisure market, having always previously been regarded as a business-only service.

ES VIVE COCKTAIL BAR: BEST BARS IN IBIZA TOWN

Es Vive didn’t gain its reputation as Ibiza’s original rock and roll hotel for no reason. In fact, the very heart of the hotel, beating with a pulse of thumping house-flavoured bass lines and smooth, sexy grooves, is The Experience Bar, open every night of the week and responsible for hosting that kind of outlandish Ibiza soiree you expect to be telling your grandkids about one day.

A chic and intimate space, The Experience Bar features comfortable, low-slung furniture where you can easily claim a corner and settle in for the night with your newfound best friends or inner circle of old mates alike. With three sassy and suave colour-themed and eclectic spaces, complete with ambient lighting, dynamic chandeliers and edgy artwork adorning the walls, this is the kind of underground nightlife experience that would be found in New York, Tokyo, London or Paris – but thankfully for Es Vive guests and Ibiza visitors, is found right here on the decadent shores of Ibiza.

With our favourite resident DJs and very special guests behind the decks, the hottest house music will be sheer euphoria to your ears and get your toes tapping until you find you’ve actually been dancing with reckless abandonment for hours alongside Ibiza’s sassiest, sexiest and super-coolest partygoers, who continue descend upon the bar as the night goes on. Keep your eyes peeled, as more than a few famous faces have been spotted here in the early hours.

Professional mixologists behind the bar serve up spectacular cocktails to keep the party going at maximum potential, along with a selection of premium liqueurs and spirits… never forgetting of course, those famous ‘chupitos’ – shots of Ibiza’s local drop, Hierbas Ibicencas, guaranteed to give you that extra burst of energy when you need it.

Stick around and just see where the night takes you… go on, you know you want to!

Awkward Flight to Ibiza For Kate Moss

Pete Doherty bumped into former girlfriend Kate Moss on a flight to Ibiza on Tuesday, reports said.

The pair are understood to have come face-to-face after the model’s daughter spotted Doherty at Gatwick airport.

The former couple then travelled on the same plane together, but didn’t speak during the flight.

"They both looked extremely uncomfortable and spent the whole flight trying not to catch each other's eyes,” a source told The Sun.

“When the flight landed Kate was ushered off and they did not speak."

The pair split in 2007 after an 18 month romance. Moss now dates Kills frontman Jamie Hince.

Doherty was travelling to the clubbing mecca to perform a pre-season gig at the Ibiza Rocks Bar in San Antonio.

The Euro Decline Has Benefits

The euro's sharp slide, which saw it hitting a four-year low yesterday against the dollar, should provide a welcome boost to eurozone exports and growth in the coming months

In Spain, exporters and the tourist businesses that depend on British and other visitors from outside the eurozone welcome any fall in the euro.

Bad news for Europe, good news for U.S. tourists

"The power of the pound is good for the tourist sector," said Pedro Iriondo, president of Mallorca's tourism development association, a private sector group. "As always in the tourism business, when the currency of the destination falls against the currency of the visitors, they have more buying power." However, The Pound also declined 0.6% against the Euro yesterday, as investors brace themselves for drastic public spending cuts, as officials attempt to rein in the biggest budget deficit amongst the Group of Seven nations.

In Spain, Portugal and Greece, the countries hardest hit by the crisis, exports beyond the eurozone are relatively unimportant as sources of growth. A weaker currency would help, but "it is not a get out of jail free card", said Gilles Moec, European economist at Deutsche Bank.

Travel News Ibiza

May will soon be here and Ibiza will be ready. The Johannesburg Times Deals with Travel routes and costs to Ibiza.

Q: We are travelling on a tight budget and would like to go from Barcelona to Ibiza in early July. What would a flight cost? Is there a ferry service that travels overnight (saving the cost of a hotel room)? If so, please advise us on schedules, prices and how to book. - Sam Ellison

A: If you check www.skyscanner.net, you can find details of low-cost carriers on this route. They include Iberia, Spanair and Vueling. The cheapest ticket I could find for early July was à60 (about R590) per person. The flight takes 55 minutes. The two main ferry operators from Barcelona to Ibiza are Balearia Ferries and Trasmediterranea. The journey takes around eight hours. The most cost-effective journey for you would be the overnight crossing, which leaves at 11pm and arrives in Ibiza at 7am.

I did a test booking for a one-way journey for two passengers in economy seats in early July with Trasmediterranea. The fare for a Friday departure was à67 per person, while a Sunday night fare was à47 per person. You can get further details on www.directferries.com or www.aferry.com.

Ibiza Party Hotel Goes 'Til 6 In Tha Morning

If you are going to Ibiza, then let's face the facts, you are probably looking for a party hotel.

Figueretas is one of the quieter spots on the island, about a mile from Ibiza town, however Figueretas Es Vive Hotel and the all out pool parties they throw are not for those seeking relaxation.

This is the kind of place you stay when you want to pre-party, go clubbing with gaggles of hotel mates, then post party back at the hotel.

By day the Es Vive pool is packed with bikini clad all night revelers in recovery mode and by about 3am the hotel party begins to take hold. A Smirnoff bar and an onsite DJ help the club kids along.

Don't book one of the 55 Ikea clad rooms expecting rest and relaxation, and it goes without saying you best be looking elsewhere if you are on a family holiday. If you really want to impress your fellow clubbers, book one of the two corner suites--huge showers, multiple balconies, and an ocean view.

The introduction of the new Amsterdam services complements Vueling’s existing services to the city from Barcelona, Valencia Malaga and Seville, taking the total number of Vueling connections between Amsterdam and Spain to seven.

New Summer Flights Schedule

At the beginning of 2010, new flights to Milan, Berlin, Munich, Paris, Amsterdam, and Rome were launched. The number of flights to Copenhagen has increased. With the summer flight schedule, now there are new cities in the map of flights – Hamburg, Edinburgh, Heraklion, Ibiza, Palermo.

Cool, Chilled Out Hotel in Ibiza

A few years ago a group of young entrepreneurs realized that Ibiza , the island that had everything except ‘cold' snow, was missing something? The finest clubs in Europe, dozens of the finest beaches to be found in the Mediterranean and the option to party 24/7, back to back, for as long as you could stay standing – what could possibly be missing? The answer was “a place to crash out that matched the class and style of the rest of the island action…”

So ‘Es Vivé' was born and Ibiza, which is not renowned for quality hotels, stood back and watched as the island was introduced to the concept of a cool, chilled out, laid back clubber's paradise.

The hotel is conveniently located at C/. Carlos Román Ferrer 8, in the Figueretas area, about a mile west of the centre of Ibiza town.

It is well hidden from the road outside, but as you enter the huge decked terrace surrounding the beautiful pool and settle into one of the sturdy wooden sun loungers – then find yourself drifting off into memories of last night and anticipations of forthcoming fun as the thick mattress absorbs you – you realize that this truly is the definition of cool in the middle of the big city…

With funky ambient music and crazy art-deco style lapping at your senses, while the attentive staff pander to your every whim with exotic suggestions to both tempt and sate your appetite, you know that you really have arrived – and the only reason that you'll be tempted to leave is to be able to return again?

Art deco funky hotel in Ibiza

Tucked away like a miniature enchanted kingdom in Figueretes you’ll find the Art Deco-meets-rock’n’roll styling of the infamous Es Vive hotel.

With a cool turquoise-on-white façade hiding the decadent thump of a hard-partying heart, it’s easy to see why this exclusive, funky, party hotel has quickly become one of the island’s true must-dos. During the day, guests lounge next to the sapphire pool, sipping icy cocktails or enjoying the glorious Mediterranean-Asian fusion menu created by chef Luciano Scardaccione.

The luxury hotel restaurant is open to the public so his trademark dishes such as foie gras and tapenade salad with passion fruit coulis or gourmet fish and chips can be experienced by one and all. New for this year is the Es Vive spa that will expand the cocoon of indulgence to include relaxing massages and beauty treatments to make post-party skin fresh as a daisy.

It’s at night the real Es Vive comes out to play however, in the Smirnoff Experience Bar – three intimate rooms with undeniable glamour. Top promoters including Kidology, Lip Gloss, Feeling Music, Fierce Angels, Togetherness, Plushdafunk and resident DJ Ben Santiago provide the musical accompaniment to saucy frolics and glitzy capers till the very wee hours of the morning.

If the party gets too much you can always take a disco nap in one of the 55 airy rooms – each uniquely furnished. Jason has sourced exquisite wallpapers and antique lamps, all different, making each room a personal Shangri-La. But let’s be honest: who wants to go to bed when there’s so much fun happening?

Especially when you can sleep by the pool later!

Bryan Ferry to play Pete Tong's Wonderland Ibiza launch night

NME report that Bryan Ferry is set to play at the launch night of Pete Tong's Wonderland Ibiza.

Taking place at the island's Eden on June 25, the opening event will include DJ sets by Steve Lawler, Pete Tong, Moda and Jaymo & Andy George.

"Ibiza is an island full of surprises and I imagine me playing there must be one of them," Bryan Ferry said. "However, I have been a big fan of various kinds of dance music for a very long time, and my first visit to Ibiza was more than 30 years ago, so I feel fairly qualified and very enthusiastic about performing there."

Now in its third year, Wonderland Ibiza will hold 15 parties across the summer running from June 25 until October 1.

Tickets for the launch night are available via Petetong.sandbag.uk.com and for more information visit WonderlandIbiza.com.

New Security Screens 50% extra Passengers At London City

Opodo are reporting that Travellers catching flights from London City airport this year will benefit from measures that have been introduced to reduce passenger processing times.

Two new security check-in lanes were recently opened at the base, increasing its total number of search areas to six.

Extra security staff have also been recruited and new equipment has been purchased to speed up the flow of passenger traffic through the airport.

London City chief executive Richard Gooding OBE said: 'The airport's core offering is to ensure the passenger experience is stress-free with quick departure and arrival processing times.

'To restore quick security processing times the airport undertook a number of measures to speed up security searches. We are pleased the new search facility, which has been operational since the weekend, has increased passenger screening capacity by 50%.'

While it is primarily used as a business travel hub, London City has made a number of changes to its network recently to appeal to leisure travellers.

British Airways will launch new flights to Ibiza and Mallorca from the airport in May, while a year-round service to Barcelona is set to be introduced this month.

Ibiza is promoting itself at the Madrid International Tourism Fair, FITUR 2010, as the preferred destination for water sports fans. In fact, two of the most important events on the calendar are being held on the island: The 23rd edition of the Salt Route, the biggest open water regatta in the Mediterranean, and the "Kimros" International Sea Kayaking Regatta.

The 2010 Salt Route: Takes place from 1 to 4 April 2010, over the Easter Week holiday period, with over 2,600 crew members competing. The Northern version sets sail on Thursday 1 April at 12:00 noon from the Port Ginesta Yacht Club in Barcelona, over a course measuring 140 miles straight to the Sant Antoni Yacht Club. The Eastern version sets sail at 16:00 on the same day from the Yacht Club in Denia and covers a 120 mile route that involves passing Formentera to port and sailing up the North coast of Ibiza to Sant Antoni. This latter route may be altered due to prevailing weather conditions.

The island of Ibiza, with its yacht clubs and marine resorts, offers many opportunities for enjoying the sea, with sailing, scuba diving, snorkelling, windsurfing, kitesurfing, water skiing and other disciplines. The island is also home to numerous companies providing all kinds of services, from boat hire to training courses with fully qualified instructors.

Weekend Sunshine Ibiza

Love Ibiza Census

Ibiza looks set to continue to grow in popularity as a holiday destination, according to the findings of a recent survey conducted by Ibiza holiday guide website Love Ibiza.

In a survey of 232 clubbers who had visited Ibiza in 2009 for holidays and working holidays, 45% were visiting Ibiza for the first time and 96% of respondents said that they would be returning to Ibiza for future holidays. 78% intend to return to Ibiza for their summer holidays in 2010.

The Ibiza clubbing scene has evolved in recent years from being focused solely on house music to being more inclusive of other genres, this has led to an increase in the popularity of Ibiza outside its traditional core audience. The popularity of Ibiza as a holiday resort among young people does not appear to be negatively impacted by the economic downturn or the increasing price of holidaying in Europe.

A number of other key finding from the survey, titled the 'Ibiza Holiday Census', show:

- Easyjet was the most popular airline for flying from the UK to Ibiza
- Holidaymakers preferred to plan their trips independently using the internet to get the lowest prices on flights and hotels
- The respondents were on the whole satisfied or very satisfied with the service they received on their Ibiza holidays, including flights and accommodation.
- Although the summer job market in Ibiza is competitive the majority of season workers found employment in Ibiza soon after arriving.
- Amnesia, which starred in the Kevin and Perry movie set in Ibiza, was named the most popular nightclub by the survey

Full summaries and data from the survey are available at the Love Ibiza website:

The survey covers 6 sections:

1. Ibiza holidays
2. Working holidays
3. Flights
4. Accommodation
5. Clubs and bars
6. Music and DJ’s
